Problem

Conns HomePlus is an e-commerce retailer that sells home appliances, furniture, and electronics. The company’s website had a complex and cluttered menu that made it difficult for users to find what they were looking for. The menu was also not 100% mobile-friendly, which made it even more difficult for users to shop on their tablets.

RESEARCH

References and Research

In addition to analyzing data from heatmaps, clicks, engagement, and user feedback, I also looked for references on other websites and conducted research about menu design from Baymard. Baymard is a website that provides research and insights on e-commerce usability. The data analysis confirmed the findings of the user research, and that the principles of good menu design outlined by Baymard were consistent with my own findings.

I found that the following principles were important for good menu design:

  • Clarity: The menu should be clear and easy to understand. The categories should be well-organized and the labels should be clear and concise.
  • Consistency: The menu should be consistent with the rest of the website’s design. The colors, fonts, and overall style of the menu should match the rest of the website, which creates a cohesive user experience.
  • Mobile-friendliness: The menu should be mobile-friendly. The layout of the menu should adapt to different screen sizes, so users can easily shop on their phones or tablets.

DESIGN

Solution

The goal of the menu redesign was to create a more user-friendly and mobile-friendly menu that would help users find what they were looking for faster and easier. The new menu was designed with the principles described above in mind (Clarity, Consistency, Mobile-friendliness).

CONCLUSION

Takeaways

  • Data analysis: Data analysis can be a valuable tool for understanding user behavior and identifying problems with a website’s design. In this case, data analysis from heatmaps, clicks, engagement, and user feedback helped me to understand the problems with the old menu and to inform the design of the new menu.
  • User feedback: User feedback is also an essential part of the design process. In this case, I collected feedback from users through surveys on the website. This feedback helped me to understand what users liked and disliked about the old menu, and to make changes to the new menu that would address their concerns.
  • Principles of good menu design: There are a number of principles of good menu design that can help to create a menu that is clear, consistent, and mobile-friendly. These principles include:
    • Using clear and concise labels
    • Organizing categories logically
    • Using consistent colors, fonts, and styles
    • Making the menu mobile-friendly
  • The importance of user experience: User experience is an important factor in the success of any website. A well-designed menu can help to improve the user experience by making it easier for users to find what they are looking for.
