Hey guys? Today, I’m here for us to dive a little into this universe of UX Design in games. My name is Luan I am a UX designer, and today I want to share with you some secrets, they are not really secrets, right, because they are there in the game and such, but explain a little bit about how some UX design elements work in some games, and the game I’m going to talk about today is Battlefield 2042 I hope you guys like it, if you like games and design I’m sure you will like this one video that’s why I ask you to leave here a like in this video and if you’re not subscribed to the channel already subscribe here as well.
Alright?
So let’s go to the video. And the first point I want to bring up here for you, It’s about the HUD aka the alert screen which is the main screen, let’s say like this, that you see during the whole game, right? And the HUD plays a role fundamental to the quality of your experience as a player, it’s like a well-rehearsed choreography where designers are concerned with ensuring that you don’t have to juggle mental to remember all the important information after all our memory is shorter than Toretto’s hair, and we keep forgetting things all the time which is absolutely normal and when we are talking about a frenetic game like Battlefield that concern is more than essential UX designers are true masters at reduce cognitive load not only in games. And notice here on the screen there is a variety of elements and indications that make everything much clearer and more understandable. In the corner lower right, for example, we have
the weapons and items you carry and there you always find indications of necessary buttons to navigate among them in addition to information about ammo, items, and reload time there is no room for confusion and look even the triangle comes with a marking indicating that it is the top button and we have it with the X with the marking indicating that it is the bottom button and so onwards the actions happen in a very natural way. Another crucial piece of information is your character’s health. So here we have the green bar which is the thermometer of your survival when it’s in the green it’s ok, but if it turns red then you better run and give yourself a little time to recover, but if you’re a root player like me, you will face it until your last breath help me stand the second point is the feedback. The feedback is like a symphony of applause that the game does for you, it is always there indicating what is happening and everything. Remember the red screen I just told you about when you get shot and stuff? It’s the game telling you to watch out, ’cause you’re taking bullets. Now when you hit a shot on the enemy, for example, the aim changes a little bit, right? So it’s right there in the center saying that you’re hitting the guy there, right? And it even has a special setting that doesn’t come by default in the game, but that shows the amount of damage you did to the enemy, right? Displaying a number there in the center of the screen and when you finish the enemy the aim also changes and there is a special sound that echoes there, bringing a very good satisfaction when you finish the enemy. It has a very great satisfaction for me, especially when I’m a sniper. The third point here is the atmosphere of the game itself. When we talk about user experience in games, we are talking not only about usability but also about the game’s ability to fully involve us in that virtual world, designers know they need to create an exciting and fun universe, full of emotion, and believe me Battlefield is the master at this, look I don’t know if this has always happened with Battlefield I remember that in Battlefield 4, which was one that I played a lot before 2042 the others I didn’t get to play a lot I played those older ones, Battlefield 2 and everything, but I remember that in Battlefield 4 there were always these map changes during the game, for example, walls were destroyed, vehicles were exploding, buildings were falling it was chaos that turned into Art in front of us and believe in that Battlefield 2042 is not far behind in this sense in one of the maps, for example, we have the launch of a space rocket in the middle of the game there is only one piece of advice for you do not stay on the platform during the launch, seriously, speaking from personal experience oh, and there’s another map where there’s a sandstorm that invades the match, completely changing it the dynamics of the game suddenly, visibility becomes compromised, and I particularly like it to go with a thermal sight when that happens, and those moments are breathtaking, seriously it’s really cool when that happens during the match And the fourth point I want to bring here to you guys are some special actions and how they are indicated during the game that make our lives much easier there as players, so you don’t have to worry about a whirlwind of information during intense combat, the designers simplify the special actions as much as possible they want you to focus on the essential information for an incredible gaming experience. For example, when you have the ability to heal yourself after taking damage, the information appears right in the center of the screen, accompanied by the button, and you need to press it, so if you are a support player, when approaching a fallen teammate, the game shows you the information and the necessary button to revive that teammate, all in a simple and quick way so that you can get back into action as quickly as possible, and now I’d like to share some improvement suggestions with the responsible team for Battlefield 2042 So, my dear developers and designers, I’d like to ask for a little more contrast in some HUD elements, especially for brighter environments, where it’s sometimes difficult to see the icons on the weapon and item bar. So, I think it would be interesting to have a bit more contrast in that regard. Oh, and let’s standardize the buttons as well, please. Here on the screen, we have an action written as “request revival” and next to it we have “press to jump to positioning,” and in both cases, the action is to press. So, why not have “press to request revival” and “press to jump to positioning” or just the action itself, “jump to positioning” and “request revival.” So, it could be a bit more consistent in this regard, alright? I’m being a bit nitpicky here, but details make a difference and finally, a suggestion that would be really cool is the possibility of having a pinned mission on the HUD so that we can track the mission without having to pause the game or memorize the information, you know I hope you enjoyed this chat and I would also like to ask you to comment here on how your
experience playing Battlefield 2042 is going and what your experience is like playing other games too if you usually pay attention to these UX elements in games.
